Why You Should Hire a Documentary-Style Photographer for Your Wedding

Planning

I’ve seen it time and time again. A wedding photographer walks into a scene and immediately starts photographing the same thing as always. Flatlay, dress zipping, ceremony kiss, etc. – and while all of those moments are important to capture, they aren’t the full story. I’ve seen these same photographers put their camera down and miss some of the moments that feel like they complete a gallery, likely because they aren’t always the portfolio-worthy shots. The photos where the bride’s little cousins are spinning in off in a field during cocktail hour. The photo where aunt Susan is shedding a tear in the background during toasts. The uninterrupted, honest moments.

While the in-between, candid moments might not make front page of Vogue, your wedding is more than a portfolio-building opportunity for me. It’s a chance to tell your story – as beautifully and honestly as I can.

What is a documentary-style photographer?

So glad you asked! The way I see it, documentary-style is all about taking a backseat during your day. It means that I try to leave moments uninterrupted as much as possible. Sure, I may do some gentle guiding, specifically for family portraits, wedding party portraits, and portraits of you and your partner. For the most part, I tend to rely on movement-based prompts rather than uncomfortable poses for these.

I find that galleries feel so much more impactful when I decide to always be on the lookout for a moment and although I walk away with WAY more images to edit because I’m always snapping photos, you are worth more than a standard shot list. On your wedding day, you’ll find me quietly on the lookout for a good moment, even beyond the most obvious ones and for moments that no one else is even noticing (I even got my bachelor’s degree in Journalism, so this comes naturally).

All in all, when considering a wedding photographer, think about what’s most important to you. If documentary-style wedding photography seems like a good fit for you, I’d love to tell your story, just as it unfolded.
